What is Galantamine?

Galantamine is a medication used to treat symptoms of mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease, a condition that causes memory loss and mental changes. It works by preventing the breakdown of a key brain chemical called acetylcholine, which is needed for proper brain function. By slowing down this breakdown, it helps the chemical build up and work better, potentially improving thinking ability in some patients.

Galantamine is a reversible competitive acetylcholinesterase inhibitor (AChEI) that also has a unique allosteric potentiating effect on nicotinic acetylcholine receptors. In Alzheimer’s disease, the brain has reduced levels of acetylcholine (ACh). Galantamine slows the breakdown of ACh, allowing it to build up and have a greater effect on communication between nerve cells.
